"Lyambiko sings Gershwin" is the new promising album of one of the great German jazz singers and already the Thuringian is praised to the skies. No wonder, since she won the 2011 ECHO Jazz in the category "Singer of the Year."
On her new album Lyambiko interpretes known and unknown Gershwin songs in a swinging look. Convincingly, she shows her warm and almost purring voice recognition. Together with her band, consisting of Henry Köbberling (drums), Robin Draganic (double bass) and Marque Lowenthal (Grand Piano) she manages to give the Broadway legend Gershwin a fine memorial made up of his great musical hits reinterpreted. Not just recovered, but relevant studies. Lyambiko follows a number of great jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, who sang the Gershwin interpretations many years before. Here are Lyambiko’s interpretations of the great jazz legends.
"I did not only want to make sure that the Gershwin hits that everyone knows were included, but also those that you have not heard yet." says the artist. However, hits like "I Got Rhythm" and "Summertime" are not missing. The lattest classic “Porgy and Bess" shows a delightful interpretation of the band in a sensational feeling of giving. The buzzing atmosphere of summer comes here next to the tragic moments very well to the fore.
"Lyambiko sings Gershwin" is not only a work to listen, but also to witness the different moods that the four-member jazz band interprets and their passion shown.

The pairing of Afro-Mallorcan vocalist Concha Buika and Afro-Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes has apparently been a long time coming. But they are here together on this lovely recording, featuring songs from a wide variety of composers, in a handful of duets, or with the Valdes' band backing them. El Ultimo Trago - translated as "The Last Drink" is as much a tribute to Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, a major influence on Buika.

The single-disc 2011 collection Selections from Swingin' into the 21st features a mix of large- and small-group sessions from such albums as The Marciac Suite, Standard Time, Vol. 4: Marsalis Plays Monk, Standard Time, Vol. 6: Mr. Jelly Lord, At the Octoroon Balls: String Quartet No. 1, the box set Live at the Village Vanguard, and others. Billed as Marsalis' picks of some of his favorite tracks from each album, also included are highlights from his 2002 orchestral and big-band piece All Rise. The best cuts from the Swingin' series were the small-group sessions where Marsalis and his septet got to stretch out with longer solos and inspired group interplay, as on the rollicking New Orleans second-line number "Juba and a O'Brown Squaw" from Live at the Village Vanguard and "King Porter Stomp" from his Jelly Roll Morton album Mr. Jelly Lord. Also engaging are the slightly more modern tracks, including the two roiling, cubist Thelonious Monk numbers "Hackensack" and "Green Chimneys," which Marsalis worked up for Marsalis Plays Monk. To some extent, Marsalis' extended large-ensemble pieces don't work as well in the compilation and by design should really be sought out within the context of their full recordings. That said, taken on their own merits, such pieces as the bluesy "Loose Duck" from The Marciac Suite and the lyrical violin-led ballad "Morning Song" are superb orchestral jazz pieces that showcase the urbane and always swinging mind of Marsalis. ~ Matt Collar

Celia Mur es para mi la vocalista mas interesante de la ultima generacion de ibericas con disco. Su anterior trabajo, "Footprints", dejo un grato regusto al ver que ella ?si! se lanzaba a la improvisacion. Siempre me ha resultado extrano considerar cantante de jazz a cantantes que no improvisan. Entiendo que esa es una caracteristica ineludible del jazz. Y en el actual panorama internacional del "mainstream" vocal pocas/os lo hacen. Posiblemente es el genero jazzistico (si lo consideramos como tal) que menos ha evolucionado en muchos anos (con excepciones en nombres que tienden al desconocimiento general).

The Hot Club de France was more of an appreciation society than an actual club or establishment in France. The group issued newsletters, sponsored radio broadcasts and film appearances, and produced records. A small phenomenon at home, this underground jazz movement soon swelled to worldwide tours and festivals by the late '40s. Milan Records has gone through some of the club's recordings to produce this collection of tunes featuring such popular figures as Louis Armstrong, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Willie Smith, and Bill Coleman and the New Orleans Dippers.
